Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) Tear – Elbow

A UCL tear, common in baseball pitchers, results from repetitive valgus stress, leading to elbow pain and instability.

Causes

  • Overuse from throwing
  • Trauma
  • Improper pitching mechanics
Elbow pain

Diagnosis

  • Valgus Stress Test
  • Moving Valgus Stress Test
  • MRI for ligament integrity

Treatment

  • Strengthening of the forearm, shoulder, and core, biomechanical retraining, throwing analysis, and bracing
  • Severe tears may require Tommy John surgery.

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 3–6 months conservatively
  • Post-surgical recovery is 12–18 months.

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow, causing pain with gripping and wrist extension.

Causes

  • Repetitive gripping, wrist extension, and overuse of forearm muscles.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical tests (Cozen’s Test, Mill’s Test)
  • Tenderness over the lateral epicondyle

Treatment

  • Eccentric strengthening
  • Manual therapy
  • Dry needling
  • Bracing
  • Progressive loading

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 6–12 weeks.

Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Golfer’s elbow is inflammation of the tendons on the inner elbow, causing pain with wrist flexion and gripping.

Causes

  • Overuse from gripping, wrist flexion, or repetitive lifting.

Diagnosis

  • Resisted wrist flexion test
  • Tenderness over the medial epicondyle.

Treatment

  • Eccentric strengthening
  • Soft tissue mobilization
  • Stretching
  • Bracing
  • Gradual return to activity

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 6–12 weeks

Little League Elbow

Little League Elbow is an overuse injury affecting the growth plate on the inner elbow, leading to pain and inflammation in young athletes.

Causes

  • Excessive throwing
  • Improper mechanics
  • High pitch counts

  • X-ray to assess growth plate changes
  • Clinical evaluation for pain with throwing

Treatment

  • Rest from throwing
  • Strengthening
  • Biomechanical retraining
  • Gradual return to sport
