  • Physical Therapy For Knee Pain

Knee Arthritis (Osteoarthritis of the Knee)

Knee arthritis is the degeneration of cartilage in the knee joint, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Causes

  • Aging
  • Obesity
  • Previous knee injuries
  • Genetics
  • Overuse
Osteoarthritis

Diagnosis

  • X-rays to assess joint space narrowing
  • Clinical evaluation of mobility and pain levels

Treatment

  • Quadriceps and hip strengthening
  • Joint mobilizations
  • Bracing if needed
  • Activity modification

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 6–12 weeks conservatively
  • Total knee replacement may be needed for severe cases

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

A total knee replacement replaces a damaged knee joint with a prosthetic implant, reducing pain and restoring mobility.

Causes

  • Severe knee arthritis
  • Post-traumatic knee damage
Arrthroplasty

Diagnosis

  • X-rays confirm joint degeneration
  • Physical assessment evaluates function and mobility

Treatment

  • Post-surgical rehab includes range of motion exercises, quadriceps strengthening, gait training, and progressive functional exercises.

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 3–6 months post-surgery

Meniscus Tear

A meniscus tear is damage to the cartilage that cushions the knee joint, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty with twisting motions.

Causes

  • Trauma (twisting injury)
  • Degeneration from aging
  • Repetitive stress

Diagnosis

  • MRI confirms the tear
  • Clinical tests include McMurray’s Test and Apley’s Compression Test

Treatment

  • Strengthening of surrounding muscles
  • Balance training
  • Pain management
  • Return-to-sport programs
  • Post-surgical rehab follows a progressive strengthening protocol

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 6–12 weeks
  • Post-surgical recovery lasts 4–6 months.

ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Tear

An ACL tear is a ligament injury in the knee that causes instability and difficulty pivoting.

Causes

  • Sudden stops or changes in direction
  • Landing incorrectly
  • Direct trauma
ACL tear

Diagnosis

  • Lachman’s Test
  • Anterior Drawer Test
  • MRI for confirmation

Treatment

  • Prehabilitation before surgery includes strength and neuromuscular training.
  • Post-surgical rehab focuses on restoring range of motion, strengthening, balance, and return-to-sport training.

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 9–12 months post-surgery

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)

PFPS, or “runner’s knee,” causes pain around the kneecap due to poor tracking or muscular imbalances.

Causes

  • Weak quadriceps
  • Poor hip control
  • Overuse
  • Improper running mechanics
Patellofomoral pain

Diagnosis

  • Clinical assessment of patellar tracking
  • Pain with stairs or prolonged sitting

Treatment

  • Quadriceps strengthening
  • Hip stabilization
  • Taping
  • Gait retraining

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 6–12 weeks.
