Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve at the wrist, leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand.

Causes

  • Repetitive wrist movements, inflammation, pregnancy, diabetes, or wrist fractures.
Median Nerve

Diagnosis

  • Phalen’s Test
  • Tinel’s Sign
  • Nerve conduction studies (EMG)

Treatment

  • Nerve glides
  • Wrist splinting
  • Ergonomic modifications
  • Stretching
  • Strengthening

Recovery

  • Mild cases resolve in 4-6 weeks with conservative treatment
  • Severe cases may require surgical release, with recovery in 6-12 weeks

Wrist Tendonitis

Wrist tendonitis is inflammation of the tendons in the wrist due to repetitive use, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Causes

  • Overuse injuries, repetitive wrist motions, excessive typing, lifting, or sports activities.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical exam
  • Pain with resisted wrist movements
  • Possible ultrasound for inflammation

Treatment

  • Rest, eccentric strengthening, bracing, soft tissue mobilization, and gradual return to activity.

Recovery

  • Average Treatment Time: 4–6 weeks.
