Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) Tear – Elbow
A UCL tear, common in baseball pitchers, results from repetitive valgus stress, leading to elbow pain and instability.
Causes
- Overuse from throwing
- Trauma
- Improper pitching mechanics
Diagnosis
- Valgus Stress Test
- Moving Valgus Stress Test
- MRI for ligament integrity
Treatment
- Strengthening of the forearm, shoulder, and core, biomechanical retraining, throwing analysis, and bracing
- Severe tears may require Tommy John surgery.
Recovery
- Average Treatment Time: 3–6 months conservatively
- Post-surgical recovery is 12–18 months.
